Using snowmen can be a fun way to decorate during the long winter months, but have you thought of using penguins? If you are looking for something different, give this project a try. Cupcake Quilts is introducing a new quilting series by Stringtown Lane Quilts. This is the first of twelve monthly door/wall hangings measuring 16" x 50". Rather than using embroidery, you will have the chance to try machine applique. Additionally, people signing up for all twelve projects will be able to use a pre-programmed robotic long arm machine to do the quilting. Start the year off by trying something new.

The basic 9 Patch is a simple block like tic-tac-toe. Using a charm pack with a solid background gives it just enough sparkle. After assembly and a few simple cuts the finished block gives the illusion of a much more complicated block. Machine quilting and a no sashing assembly makes this project easy to finish on the home sewing machine.

Smocking, an age-old needle art, is simply embroidery stitches accomplished over pleats. Using just a needle and thread you, the needle artist, can create texture, flexibility, design and a bit of whimsy to most any fabric. The stitches taught are: outline, stem, cable, baby wave, trellis, and time permitting florets.

This class adds a bonus of extra half square triangles for the back of the quilt to make this one reversable. Narrow sashing on the front and back helps with construction after quilting.
